Recognizing the pivotal role of education as a driver of integration, development, community cohesion, and, ultimately, stability and security, the Foundation engages in various aspects of education. This includes ensuring universal access to education, promoting social advancement, offering training opportunities, and facilitating professional integration. The Foundation also lends support to grassroots initiatives and actively encourages the advancement of educational innovation through its social incubator, Le Phare.

The CMA CGM Foundation's educational initiatives

Since its creation in 2005, the CMA CGM Foundation has supported more than 550 educational projects, both locally and internationally. It has notably focused its attention on 5 types of intervention:

Assisting the construction and renovation of schools
The Foundation mobilizes its time, resources, and expertise to build and renovate schools all around the world.

In Côte d'Ivoire, the Foundation partnered with the Magic System Foundation to build a primary school for 200 students in Abidjan. The school includes 6 classrooms, a canteen and a space made up of 4 transformed shipping containers that serve as the school's library, teachers' room, office, and reception area. As part of this partnership, a second school was built in Bouaké and opened its doors in 2024, and a third one is currently being built in Port-Bouet.

In India, millions of children live in slums where they often lack access to quality education, nutrition, and healthcare. For this reason, the Foundation has partnered with the NGO CRY to develop 5 educational centers in the slums of Chembur, Mumbai, since 2023. The support provided to the young people in the centers is based on education, sports, and extra-curricular activities.

In 2024, the Foundation partnered with the NGO Salaam Baalak Trust to build 5 additional educational centers in Mumbai, specifically in the underprivileged neighborhoods of Dahisar, Malad Malwani, Bhandup, and Vikhroli. These 10 centers provide tutoring, sports, nutritional and psychological support to approximately 2,800 street children per year.

In Kenya, the Foundation donated 11 containers to the Kenyan Red Cross Society (KRCS), which were transformed and integrated into the KRCS’ Innovation Center in Mombasa, known as #IOME001. The center provides access to resources, training and mentorship for youth and women, encouraging the creation of businesses and start-ups, improving employability, and creating sustainable solutions.

In Brazil, the Foundation partnered with the NGO Gol de Letra to open a new bakery school in Vila Albertina, São Paulo, in 2024. It offers young people from the favelas the opportunity to receive two years of training in baking and confectionery, at the end of which their employability will be close to 100%.

In Vietnam, the CMA CGM Foundation partnered with the NGO Enfants d’Asie to renovate 3 educational and social centers in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, in the disadvantaged areas of Thu Duc, Tan Phu and the 8th district. In 2024, these centers are expected to accommodate up to 2,400 children and 1,085 parents who will benefit from high-quality academic and psycho-social support.

In Lebanon, in 2022, the Foundation's support enabled the installation of photovoltaic panels in 12 schools, improving learning conditions for 6,000 students. In 2024, the Foundation's partnership with the Institut Européen de Coopération et de Développement (IECD) enabled 40 students to participate in a vocational training program in renewable energy. These students then installed solar panels and implemented initiatives to reduce energy consumption in 3 schools in Lebanon.

The Foundation is also launching digital induction and tutoring initiatives. In 2024, in partnership with the Lebanese NGO Nafda, the Foundation transformed 2 containers and 3 educational spaces into "maker labs" where students have the opportunity to improve their digital skills. In partnership with the NGO Lebanese Alternative Learning, the Foundation has also built a "knowledge container" that is currently traveling across Lebanon. This container is equipped with a wifi router and allows students to download the "Tabshoura" application, giving them free, unlimited offline access to high-quality educational content.

Improving access to quality education for all

The CMA CGM Foundation carries out 2 types of actions to improve access to quality education for all around the world.

First and foremost, it ships educational materials and supplies free of charge to places that need them most. For example, thanks to its “Containers of Hope” partnership with UNICEF, the Foundation shipped 3.5 million schoolbooks to Chad free of charge in 2021. They were distributed to schoolchildren aged between 7 and 11 in 5 cities in Chad (N'Djamena, Kanem, Mongo, Abéché and Moundou).

To mitigate the effects of the economic crisis and enable students to meet their academic requirements, the Foundation also supplied and distributed 9,500 school kits to 40 schools across Lebanon in 2022. The Foundation also covered the tuition fees of 2,900 students across 22 schools in Lebanon.

Providing training and professional integration

The CMA CGM Foundation is launching the "Formations d'Avenir" program in 2024 for professional training and integration, notably supporting 10 schools and associations in Marseille. These organizations provide annually 1,200 young people at risk of dropping out of school and far from employment each year with training and qualification opportunities in forward-looking sectors such as digital, energy transition, transport and logistics, cinema and audiovisual, heritage restoration, etc.

In 2023, the CMA CGM Foundation also launched its partnership with ACTA VISTA and La Citadelle de Marseille to support the restoration of the Fort d'Entrecasteaux, a 17th century listed building in Marseille. The Foundation's support enabled 90 people in vulnerable situations to benefit from mentoring and a one-year training course in heritage conservation. At the end of the training course, the participants got the opportunity to obtain a professional mason's qualification, the "titre de maçon du bâti ancien".

In Lebanon, the CMA CGM Foundation is also working towards professional training and integration, with:

  • The International Maritime Academy (IMA) for 85 young maritime technicians, particularly in the electrical and mechanical fields;
  • Institut Européen de Coopération et de Développement (IECD) for 40 young technicians in solarization and energy efficiency in buildings;
  • Arcenciel for 25 young agricultural technicians specializing in high value-added table grapes and avocados.

All these courses are based on the acquisition of skills through practical application in work-schools, as well as individualized support to help reintegration under the best possible conditions.

Promoting education through extra-curricular activities

The CMA CGM Foundation is actively involved in promoting education through various extracurricular activities, particularly sports and the discovery of the sea. Its aim is to democratize access to sporting activities for children and young people from all backgrounds.

Following the appointment of the CMA CGM Group as the Official Logistics Partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Foundation has contributed to the Legacy of the Games in Marseille through a number of projects:

The renovation of several City Stades in conjunction with the OM Fondation, the Agence Nationale du Sport and the City of Marseille. The first of these stadiums, located at the foot of La Major Cathedral in the 2nd arrondissement, was inaugurated in 2023. Two other city stadiums are scheduled to open in Marseille by the end of 2024.

The renovation in 2024 of a modern, multifunctional sports field at the Maison d'Enfants à Caractère Social (MECS) de La Reynarde, located in Marseille's 11th arrondissement. Thanks to this project, 40 youngsters now have the chance to practice a variety of team sports, rollerblading and running.

A series of studies have shown that a large number of Marseille children under the age of 12 do not know how to swim, and that drowning is the leading cause of everyday accidents for people under the age of 25, which motivated the Foundation to take action through :

For the past 4 years, we have supported the "Un pas vers la Mer" program, which enables 150 children each year to participate in a swimming program developed by the Marseille Capitale de la Mer association.

The implementation in 2024 of a Discover the Sea program for 800 children and young people from Marseille's social centers, who benefitted from nautical activities on the Frioul Islands, in partnership with the Léo Lagrange Méditerranée association.

The organization in 2024 of various nautical activities (swimming, canoeing, kayaking, etc.) at the Corbières nautical base in l'Estaque, in partnership with the association Le Grand Bleu, for 2,000 children and young people from Marseille's priority neighborhoods. The partnership also provides for the training of 115 young people in professions related to the supervision and safety of these activities, such as lifeguards, lifesavers and pool attendants.

The launch in 2023 of an introductory sailing program for 100 Marseille youth aboard skipper Eric Bellion's schooner Ahoy.

Supporting social innovation through its social incubator: Le Phare

The Foundation also aims to support entrepreneurs in developing innovative solutions with a social and educational vocation through its social incubator Le Phare.

Based in Marseille, Guadeloupe (the Caribbeans), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), Le Phare offers customized support free of charge to entrepreneurs with high-impact solutions, for a period of 9 months.

Since its launch in 2021, Le Phare has supported 55 projects, all of which propose innovative solutions to combat school failure, learn citizenship and professionally integrate vulnerable groups.
