Our actions

Every day we look towards new horizons. With our sights set on the future, we support those whom our future depends on—young people and children. Over the last fifteen years and more, we have stepped up our initiatives to help the most vulnerable.

Making education for all a priority

Le Phare, an innovative social incubator in Marseille

Le Phare is our social incubator, designed to encourage the creation of innovative social businesses supporting education and benefiting the Marseilles region. Concretely, it helps young entrepreneurs developing original solutions to key issues: school dropouts among children from disadvantaged backgrounds, difficulties in accessing training for young people who are far from employment or barriers to professional integration for vulnerable groups. This support is offered for free for a period of six months and includes 100 hours of help with creating a business, individual mentoring meetings and access to a coworking space.

Taking part in humanitarian aid initiatives

Our operations cover the entire globe and every day we witness the humanitarian crises facing many countries. We strive to support the communities affected by these crises around the world.

Containers of Hope: one Foundation, several NGOs and tons of hope

Containers of Hope serves to transport humanitarian aid to countries affected by natural disasters, conflict, famine or other crises. This is a tangible and effective way of supporting the most vulnerable communities, working in partnership with world-renowned NGOs.

We provide them with our expertise and our facilities for free, in particular our fleet of over 500 ships serving more than 420 ports, as well as our fleet of cargo planes. Since 2012, about 15,000 tons of essential items have been transported to 40 crisis-hit countries, mainly in Africa.

A strategic partnership with UNICEF

We work hand in hand with UNICEF, a UN agency that promotes the rights and wellbeing of all children, striving in particular to reach the most vulnerable and marginalized children.

Each year, we transport free of charge for UNICEF 200 containers of essential supplies for children all over the world, including educational equipment as well as medicines and emergency food products. For example, 3.4 million schoolbooks have been transported for children in Chad.

A framework agreement with the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs’ Crisis and Support Center

Since 2020, we have provided the Crisis and Support Center with our Group’s and our Foundation’s expertise, facilities and international network in terms of humanitarian logistics to support the French government with emergency aid programs.

For example, we have contributed to a major humanitarian operation to help India. At the peak of the Covid-19 health crisis, an aircraft from our CMA CGM AIR CARGO division was mobilized to transport 8 oxygen production units in record time. This allows each hospital which benefited from one of these units to be oxygen autonomous for 10 years.

Exceptional measures in response to the crisis in Lebanon

Following the terrible explosion in Beirut on August 4, 2020, which destroyed part of the city and resulted in many deaths, we gave our support to the people of Lebanon with the “A Humanitarian Ship for Lebanon” operation, mobilizing a ship completely filled with emergency humanitarian aid.

In the months that followed, we continued to support the people of Lebanon by reserving space on board CMA CGM ships to deliver more than 130 containers of humanitarian supplies for free since September 2020.

In partnership with Lebanese hospitals and charities, we also bought and delivered to the final beneficiaries medical equipment and baby formula in response to the rapid deterioration in the health and food situation.

Encouraging our staff members to get involved

Our mission is also to give our staff members the opportunity to take part in meaningful initiatives to help others. Their involvement by our side enables our partners to benefit from the human support that is often crucial in ensuring the permanence of their activities on a daily basis, as well as for their long-term development.

Their support can come in a variety of forms, such as skills sponsorship: taking time out of their working hours representing the equivalent of five days a year, they can lend their expertise to charities such as Impact Jeunes, Institut de l’Engagement and Article 1.

A number of our staff members have also become tutors to high school students within the framework of a partnership with Télémaque, which promotes equal opportunity in education.

Others have taken part in initiatives by food banks and Emmaüs to provide food aid and books and toys for children from underprivileged areas over the Christmas period.
