Our Fleet

At CMA CGM, our fleet is what makes us. You can count on our fleet of first-rate ships to transport your goods all over the world with the highest performance standards. It combines three major strengths: size, with more than 650 ships and a combined capacity of 23,6 million TEU; diversity, with ships of all types to meet all needs ; and innovation, incorporating the latest technologies in terms of security and environmental protection.

Acting For Planet - The Three renewable energies

A high performance and increasingly environmentally friendly fleet

A fleet supporting energy transition

Our diversified fleet includes some of the biggest container ships in the world, capable of carrying enormous volumes of goods for our clients. One is the world’s largest liquefied natural gas-powered container ship, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE – named after the Group’s founder – our flagship launched in 2020. This magnificent ship is outstanding in terms of its size and capacity: longer than four football fields and as high as a 26-story building, with a capacity of 23,000 TEU. A symbol of our operational, commercial and environmental excellence, it is the first in a series of nine container ships fueled by natural gas. These ships operate on the French Asia Line (FAL), the CMA CGM Group’s iconic line linking Asia to Europe, one of the longest shipping routes in the world.

LNG-powered vessels to respond to  environmental concerns

A major innovation for the transportation sector, gas is currently the best technology available to protect air quality.  These types of vessels reinforce our lead in the introduction of regulations on air pollutants. They also represent a first step towards the carbon neutrality objective that our Group has set for itself by 2050.

A diversified that adapts to all your needs

From the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, the world’s largest container ship flying the French flag, with a capacity of 23,000 TEU, to the smallest feeder ship with capacity of 300 TEU, we are the world’s third-largest shipowner, offering a balanced  fleet. Knowing how to adapt the size of our vessels to the type of cargo assigned to us also makes us more responsive and enables us to achieve economies of scale in order to transport goods at lower cost. Our fleet of over 650 ships is able to transport containers of all types to meet the needs of businesses and producers of all kinds in even the most remote corners of the globe.

Our fleet of feeder ships, small vessels that navigate between the main ports and secondary ports, make it possible to reduce road transport, which is more polluting, needed to supply ships on the main shipping lines . With an average capacity of 300 to 1,000 TEU, they usually collect containers from various ports and transport them to central terminals, where they are loaded onto bigger vessels.

All these ships – from the smallest to the largest – are operated by more than 9,000 crew members offering a variety of recognized skills.

Efficient and responsible RORO ships

Our fleet of RORO (Roll on, Roll Off) ships operate across the Mediterranean serving countries in North Africa. They offer a real gateway to Europe.
These RORO ships are equipped with mobile access ramps, allowing for goods to be loaded and unloaded by towing between the edge and the wharf . By pooling onboard freight cargos, these ships also significantly reduce carbon emissions and limit noise pollution compared with road transport.

Dedicated expertise in outsized goods

How do you ship cars, trains, yachts, factory parts? Or any other kind of cargo that is too large, too heavy or too delicate to be transported by container? We have the necessary ships, equipment and expertise. Our special cargo experts work with you to come up with a tailor-made solution and remain by your side throughout the process. During transportation, at loading and unloading ports, your outsized  cargo is supervised by a dedicated team. These highly qualified professionals pay the utmost attention to ensuring safe and secure handling. Did you know that we were the sole transporter of a replica of the Statue of Liberty between Le Havre and New York? To take to the seas, Lady Liberty’s little sister was unbolted and carefully packed in a plexiglass box, specially designed for the transportation of sculptures, and then placed in a 20 foot container.

And what’s next?

And what’s next?

The CMA CGM fleet is one of the most modern in the world and we are continually enhancing it with high-tech ships that are more respectful of the planet. To support our customers and the growth of the market, we have ordered 57 new ships that are due to join our fleet by 2025:

  • 6 gas-powered 15,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessels
  • 6 gas-powered 13,000 TEU vessels
  • 6 gas-powered 8,000 TEU vessels
  • 3 gas-powered 7,900 TEU vessels
  • 10 gas-powered 7,300 TEU vessels
  • 10 gas-powered 2,000 TEU vessels
  • 10 Very Low Sulfur Oil (VLSFO)-powered 5,500 TEU vessels
  • 6 VLSFO-powered 5,900 TEU vessels.

The CMA CGM Group opted to use dual fuel gas vessels as early as 2017 and will have 20 ships running on LNG and biomethane by the end of 2022. This solution has already made it possible to almost completely reduce air pollutants emissions. The engines used in these vessels already have the technical capacity to run on e-methane (instead of LNG), a net zero carbon fuel. This “e-methane ready” fleet will comprise 61 vessels by the end of 2025.
