#PlantingForPlanet: 110 000 trees to regenerate nature

Reading time: 5 min

CMA CGM undertakes a global reforestation initiative. 110 000 trees will be planted throughout 12 countries as part of local reforestation programs designed to regenerate nature and support the development of local communities. 110 000 trees for each of the Group’s 110 000 staff members.

The CMA CGM Group is resolutely committed to sustainable development and to the preservation of our natural environment. As such, several initiatives have been undertaken that fully embody our "Acting for People", "Acting for Planet" and "Acting for Fair Trade" commitments.

This global reforestation initiative will deliver environmental, social and economic benefits within each of the local communities and throughout the 12 countries involved in the project. Beyond mitigating the impacts of deforestation, planting trees promotes the regeneration of soils and ecosystems that are crucial to preserving biodiversity.

CMA CGM 110 000 trees

Trees are essential to life on earth. They capture and store CO2 present in our atmosphere, thereby playing a central role in regulating global climate. They contribute to preventing soil erosion, and enable to capture rain and ground water. They play a pivotal “natural balancing” role and in some cases provide a source of food, heating, construction materials and sustainable craftsmanship when responsibly sourced. Il addition, trees provide the natural habitat for 80% of terrestrial animal biodiversity whose integrity is essential, today more than ever.

By contributing to pre-established local reforestation and agroforestry programs, this operation aims at creating value for local communities and the Group’s economic partners, the farmers and other local producers and exporters.

This project is fully aligned with the Group’s values of exemplarity and boldness and further showcases CMA CGM’s resolute determination towards promoting environmentally responsible initiatives and contributing to a more sustainable world for future generations. In addition, a number of CMA CGM staff members will have the opportunity to take part in participatory plantings in one or more of the 12 locations worldwide. This operation is led in collaboration with PUR PROJET, the Group’s partner with whom we develop an exclusive carbon compensation offer as part of our environmentally responsible ACT with CMA CGM+ services.
