One Ocean Summit: CMA CGM Group initiatives to protect the oceans

On February 11, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, will attend the high-level conference with French President Emmanuel Macron as well as with numerous Heads of Government and business leaders. He will propose a new concrete set of concrete actions to protect biodiversity and marine ecosystems.

The Summit is also an opportunity to present the Group's recent commitments and actions to preserve natural ecosystems: 

At COP 26 in November 2021, Rodolphe Saadé has committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. This commitment is based on actions that immediately initiate the transition to low-carbon transport and logistics:

• The Group continues to develop its fleet of dual fuel gas vessels powered by LNG. A fleet that is already compatible with future technologies such as biomethane and e-methane. LNG is the most available advanced technology to preserve air quality and fight against ocean acidification.
• On April 8, 2021, CMA CGM launched the first low-carbon shipping service by choosing biomethane, a green non-fossil gas produced from organic waste, among other things. This fuel allows our ships to reduce CO2 emissions by 67%. This fleet of "e-methane ready" vessels will include 44 ships by 2024.
• The launch of our "ACT with CMA CGM +" range of added-value services, which enables customers to choose these sustainable solutions and thus reduce or offset their greenhouse gas emissions. In 2021, 800,000 tons of CO2 were saved.
  It was then necessary to build and structure the alternative fuels industry.
• On July 5, 2021, the Group announced the launch of France's first biomethane production project at the port of Marseille Fos, in partnership with EveRé, Elengy and TotalEnergies.
• In November 2021, the Group took another step forward with a strategic partnership with Engie to promote and develop the production of synthetic methane, including e-methane. The objective is to pool R&D to build the energies of tomorrow.

Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President, Operations, Group Assets and Pool partnerships of the CMA CGM Group, will present this trajectory during the One Ocean Summit on February 10 at a Forum on “Zero Emission Ships”. 

 Other announcements followed, including:  

• The extension, on July 22, 2021, of the "Reef Recovery" program to Malaysia and the Philippines, after Australia and the Seychelles, to protect and restore coral reefs affected by global warming.
• On September 3, 2021, we signed up for the Green Marine Europe label, which imposes annual measure of our environmental performance and a continuous process of improving our impact on the climate and biodiversity.
• The partnership announced on September 15, 2021 with the Plastic Flamingo association, which fights against plastic pollution of the oceans in the Philippines.  
• The organization, in mid-October 2021, of the Group's "Planet Week", three days of exchanges with CMA CGM team members to initiate a virtuous circle for the reduction of our environmental footprint.   

The One Ocean Summit brings together heads of state and government, business leaders, NGOs and scientists around French President Emmanuel Macron. For three days, it aims to propose solutions to reduce the pollution affecting the precious reservoirs of biodiversity that are oceans.  

Committed to the protection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, CMA CGM is a pioneer in the energy transition of maritime transport and logistics. As such, the Group will actively participate in the event with the presence of its CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, on February 11:  

• At 8:15 a.m CET time, he will speak at a press conference organized by the French Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin, on the theme "Initiatives for sustainable shipping" alongside the Green Marine Europe label.  
• At 10:30 a.m. CET time, he will speak at the high-level conference of the One Ocean Summit, in the presence of the French President Emmanuel Macron and several heads of state and government, as well as business leaders.
