CMA CGM, active during COP26 in promoting the energy transition in shipping and logistics
Meeting over two weeks in Glasgow, more than 190 heads of state and tens of thousands of representatives from governments, cities, regions and non-state organizations (businesses, investors, NGOs, etc.) will attend the 26th annual UN conference on the climate with the goal of addressing four major challenges: increasing ambitions for tackling climate change, finalizing the rule for the application of the Paris Agreement, mobilizing climate financing, and strengthening the Action Agenda.
The CMA CGM Group, which is strongly committed to the energy transition in shipping and a pioneer in the use of alternative fuels, will be an active participant in the event, particularly on the days dedicated to energy (November 4), the ocean (November 5) and transport (November 10).
The Group’s experts will make the following contributions:
- On November 4, Claire Martin, Vice President Sustainability, CMA CGM Group, will speak as part of the “Ocean Stewardship Coalition” of the United Nations Global Compact on the theme “An ocean evening at COP26”.
- On November 6, Christine Cabau Woehrel, Vice President Industrial Assets and Operations, CMA CGM Group, will discuss the topic “Shipping’s 4th Propulsion revolution: the commitment and the challenge” at an event organized by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
- On November 10, Claire Martin will take part in a UN Global Compact round table on the topic: “Bridging climate mitigation with resilience and nature”.
Pioneering, concrete actions creating transport and logistics solutions that are more respectful of the planet.
Better Ways, the CMA CGM Group’s new signature, embodies its ambition to build an international trade that is more efficient, more resilient and more sustainable, in particular by adopting more environmentally friendly shipping and logistics solutions.
Thus, the CMA CGM Group, which has set itself the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, opted to use dual fuel gas vessels in 2017. These ships, which are currently running on LNG and biomethane, can eliminate almost all emissions of atmospheric pollutants and represent a first stage in our efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The engines fitted on these ships are already capable of using e-methane, a carbon-neutral fuel source. CMA CGM’s e-methane-ready fleet consists of 20 ships already in service and is set to grow to 44 ships by year-end 2024.
