On this United Nations Day dedicated to the preservation of seagrasses, CMA CGM looks back on its support to the Fondation de la Mer to preserve posidonia, lung of the Mediterranean Sea.

Posidonia, which contains 8 times more carbon than a tropical forest and acts as a nursery for 25 % of Mediterranean animal species, has already lost 34% of its surface area due to climate change and marine pollution.

CMA CGM funds will be allocated to 4 projects of protection and replanting of Posidonia:

  • Transplantation of 5,000 cutting in the bay of Marseille (Frioul and Prado beaches)
  • Restoration of 20sqm of posidionia in the Gulf of Calvi in Corsica
  • 2,000 posidonia cuttings to be transplanted in Malta

Nearly 1 hectare to be restored in the Capo Carbonara marine protected area in Sardinia
This initiative is part of the Group's broader commitment to preserving marine biodiversity, particularly in the Mediterranean, which includes rerouting vessels to avoid cetacean breeding area in the Hellenic trench, monitoring turtles and large pelagics by using Ifremer antennas installed on our ships, and installing artificial habitats in the port of Marseille with Ecocean.
