Comprendre Les Tensions Sur La Chaîne Logistique

The CMA CGM Group, a world market leader in shipping and logistics, has announced its enhanced French services with the deployment of three ships dedicated to the French market.

In total, around 30,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) of additional cargo will be transported between Asia and France.

3 dedicated ships representing around 30,000 TEU

The first of these ships, the CMA CGM TITAN, made its first call at Marseille Fos between November 25 and 27, and is currently en route for Dunkirk, where it will make a port of call on December 3, before traveling to Le Havre.

The CMA CGM TITAN is carrying a load of more than 9,000 TEU, primarily furniture, household appliances, DIY and home decor items, toys, bicycles and scooters, and automotive parts. All these goods will then be shipped to their final destinations to supply French retailers in the run-up to Christmas, as well as French manufacturers.

The CMA CGM TITAN will be followed in the coming days and weeks by the APL LE HAVRE and then the APL GWANGYANG.

CMA CGM taking action to enhance its French services

This exceptional move is one of a number of measures taken by the CMA CGM Group around the world and more specifically concerning the French market:

  • Additional 900 TEU of space allocated per week from Asia vs. 2020 (additional 2,200 TEU vs. 2019);
  • Addition of Le Havre to the FAL 1 rotation, the Group’s main shipping line between Asia and Northern Europe, as well as Dunkirk, which is already served;
  • Incorporation of the largest ships in the Group’s fleet serving Le Havre and Dunkirk (nine 23,000 TEU ships). These ships, operated under the French flag and commanded by French officers, are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG);
  • Deployment in progress of 15,000 TEU ships serving Marseille Fos, replacing 11,000 TEU ships. These ships, powered by LNG, are operated under the French flag and commanded by French officers.

The Group also decided on September 9 to freeze its spot freight rates until February 1, 2022, in order to give its clients greater visibility against the backdrop of rising spot freight rates due to port congestion and the major imbalance between demand and effective shipping capacity.

Overall, the CMA CGM Group has significantly enhanced its shipping fleet in order to support its clients worldwide:

  • 5.9% increase in shipping capacity between September 2020 and September 2021;
  • 10 new directly owned vessels and three new 15,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) charter ships have joined the Group’s fleet since the start of the year;
  • Acquisition of 51 used vessels since January 1, 2021;
  • Container ship fleet: 800,000 additional containers over 15 months, giving a total of 4.8 million units.

With this latest move and the mobilization of its teams in Marseille, Dunkirk, Montoir, Le Havre and Paris, the CMA CGM Group is continuing to take action to support its clients and enhance its services in France against the backdrop of severe global supply chain tensions.
