CMA CGM at Fruit Logistica: Ever More Innovative Services to Transport Fruits

Reading time: 5 min

The CMA CGM Group will exhibit at the 28th edition of the Fruit Logistica trade show in Berlin from 5 to 7 February. Some 79,000 visitors are expected at the biggest European event dedicated to the fruit production and transport industry. The group will showcase its innovative solutions and services for Reefer products and the cold chain, including a premium version of Climactive.

A steadily growing market

A steadily growing market

Today, fruits and vegetables make up a high percentage of goods carried in refrigerated containers (“reefers”) by CMA CGM.

This constantly expanding market has seen new trends emerge, especially in Asia.

“The Asian continent has become a new import market for fruits and vegetables, along the lines of China, which has gone mad for avocados which we transport from South America,” notes Stéphane Nielsen, Reefer Director at CMA CGM.

The group has been able to draw on its expertise to meet this burgeoning need. With a fleet of 400,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of refrigerated containers – the second-largest fleet on the market – CMA CGM is always adapting and responding to a variety of needs with

  • a young fleet: these reefers are among the youngest on the market,
  • various capacities: available in 20, 40 and 45 feet,
  • a firmly established CSR programme: 70% of CMA CGM’s reefer container fleet is low fuel consumption.

Innovative controlled atmosphere solutions to go further

“We have achieved major advances in controlled atmosphere technology which enables us to meet our customers’ new requirements, such as carrying fruit under optimal conditions over longer distances,” adds Stéphane Nielsen, in reference to Climactive.

This service developed and proposed by the group makes it possible to create an ideal gas environment by lowering the oxygen level and thus maintain the shelf life of fruits. “This technology enables us to transport avocados and melons from South America to the Middle East, for example, while preserving their freshness,” Stéphane Nielsen explains.

Under the group’s customer-centric approach, CMA CGM markets “a premium offer that includes 24/7 container monitoring (internal temperature, location, gas levels) by our experts and innovative technology that takes into account fruit respiration and adjusts the gas mix over the entire duration of the trip for optimal preservation,” he declares.

The solution is also well suited to the organic segment since Climactive makes it possible to avoid chemical applications and thus ensures customers can maintain the organic farming label for their fruits and vegetables.

Toward a comprehensive, end-to-end offering

In pursuit of its goal of continuously bringing better solutions to its customers, CMA CGM has chosen to develop dedicated logistics services and to market highly effective end-to-end solutions. One concrete example of that approach was the grand opening last October of the Chill Hub in London. The refrigerated warehouse offers 10,000 m² and 10,000 pallet locations spread across 7 distinct cold rooms which can operate between -25 °C and +16 °C. Thus, in addition to refrigerated maritime transport, the group can provide a full array of high value-added logistics services, such as product quality control, labelling, customs clearance or packaging before delivery to the final destination.
