Inaugurating the First School Renovated in Surabaya: SMP Tri Guna Bhakti
The CMA CGM Foundation has partnered with Happy Hearts Indonesia, an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of education for children in underserved areas of Indonesia, to renovate 2 schools in Surabaya, Indonesia.
SMP Tri Guna Bhakti, inaugurated on November 20th, is part of a larger complex with an elementary and high school. A tornado in 2020 severely damaged 3 classrooms and the library, while other rooms had broken floors, cracked walls, leaking roofs, and deteriorating furniture. These conditions hindered students' learning experiences.
The partnership between the CMA CGM Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia allowed for the renovation and upgrading of 7 classrooms, a teacher’s room, and 5 lavatories. It also enabled the expansion of the existing facilities through the addition of one new classroom block, made out of recycled material, as well as a 40 feet repurposed container transformed into a school library.
Sylvia Beiwinkler, CEO of Happy Hearts Indonesia, expressed her excitement for the project, “This renovation is more than just a physical transformation. It’s about giving these children a safe, inspiring place to learn and grow. We are deeply thankful to the CMA CGM Foundation for their commitment to education and sustainability. Together, we are making a real difference for this community and building a brighter future.”
Michel Azrak, President Director of CMA CGM Indonesia, echoed the sentiment, “At the CMA CGM Foundation, we support projects to enhance access to education for all. This project addresses the urgent needs of SMP Tri Guna Bhakti. It integrates innovative solutions, such as repurposing recycled materials and reducing carbon emissions, ensuring the community benefits for years to come.”
A Double Impact: Highlighting the Social and Environmental Benefits of the Project
CMA CGM staff members have played an integral role in this impactful project. In October, 15 staff members mobilized to paint the repurposed library container and will continue to contribute by organizing literature introduction sessions, sports activities, and more throughout the year. The renovation of SMP Tri Guna Bhakti has yielded significant social and environmental benefits, recycling 1.7 tons of plastic and cutting carbon emissions by 3.9 tons. This initiative now provides 560 elementary to high school students with improved educational facilities and learning conditions.
The partnership’s next phase will see the renovation and expansion of a second school in 2025, ultimately benefitting a total of 780 students through the collaboration between the CMA CGM
Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia. Additionally, a three-year training program for teachers and staff will be implemented, focusing on financial and management skills to enhance teaching quality, ensure the school's sustainability, and strengthen overall management.
Over 3,500 community members are expected to be positively impacted by this partnership in the coming years.
