Reading time: 5 min

  • A major humanitarian shipment as part of the Containers of Hope Program of the CMA CGM Foundation in partnership with the French Civile Protection.
  • Departure from Fos-sur-Mer to Mayotte, where the containers are due to arrive in the port of Longoni in mid-March.
  • Transport of essential goods and products to meet the needs of disaster populations: food supplies, water, hygiene products, reconstruction materials, etc.
  • Donations come from NGOs, local authorities and private companies mobilized to support the humanitarian emergency and the reconstruction of the island.
  • 30,000 tonnes of emergency supplies (health, food, education, etc.) transported in 2024 by the Containers of Hope program.

As part of an operation coordinated by French General Directorate for Civil Protection and Crisis Management (DGSCGC), and with the support of the CMA CGM Foundation, 50 containers of humanitarian aid are transported to Mayotte to support populations affected by cyclone Chido.

The containers were loaded on board the CMA CGM TAGE in Fos-sur-Mer on Saturday February 15, and the ship left the port overnight. The containers are due to arrive in mid-March at the port of Longoni, where they will be collected by the Prefecture of Mayotte, the French Red Cross and the Union des CCAS de Mayotte.

A collective effort to respond to emergency and support reconstruction

This operation, assisted by the DGSCGC, relies on contributions from NGOs such as the French Food Banks (Banques Alimentaires), which provide about a third of the total volume of this shipment, the Bataillon des Marins Pompiers de Marseille and the companies involved.

While the emphasis is on sending essential food supplies, the operation also includes the shipment of equipment for the reconstruction of the island, as part of the “Mayotte Debout” program.

Before departure, all the products were centralized at the CMA CGM Group warehouse in Fos-sur-Mer before being loaded onto the ship. As part of its Containers of Hope program, the CMA CGM Foundation takes in charge the delivery of the 50 containers, mobilizing the Group's expertise at the service of DGSCGC and solidarity.

Containers of Hope: 30,000 tonnes of emergency equipment transported free of charge in 2024

In the face of conflicts and natural disasters, the CMA CGM Foundation mobilizes the Group's expertise and transport and logistics solutions (containers, ships, aircraft, trucks, etc.) to act quickly and effectively on behalf of populations affected by crises.

Through its Containers of Hope program, the Foundation has developed a real expertise in humanitarian logistics and established major partnerships with public and private organizations committed to humanitarian action.

Since 2012, the program has enabled free of charge maritime transport of 63,000 tonnes of emergency supplies (health, food, education, etc.) to 97 countries to support populations affected by humanitarian crises, half of which as been transported in 2024 alone.

In 2024, the CMA CGM Foundation continued to develop the Containers of Hope program by welcoming new major partners such as the World Food Program, Americares, Première Urgence Internationale and national Red Cross organizations such as the Lebanese Red Cross, the Kenyan Red Cross and the American Red Cross. This year, the World Food Program became the principal beneficiary of the program, ahead of UNCEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross. This year also marks the reinforcement of our aid to Africa, which now represents two-thirds of all shipments. In addition, over 1,000 tonnes of food supplies were transported to French overseas territories through our partnership with the French Food Banks (Banques Alimentaires).

CMA CGM Group committed alongside the French government in Mayotte

Since the passage of cyclone Chido, the CMA CGM Group has been fully mobilized to support the affected populations. By setting up a maritime bridge, huit of the Group's vessels transported more than 2,441 containers, 3.5 million liters of water and 1,500 tonnes of humanitarian goods. One hundred vehicles and 20 tonnes of animal feed were also transported.

The CMA CGM Group, through Ceva Logistics, also mobilized to charter 12 flights from Paris carrying a total of 990 tonnes of goods.

On site, the 143 staff members of CMA CGM Mayotte, which was severely affected by the weather conditions, actively participated in the unloading operations. On Reunion Island, the Group's staff members mobilized to set up an exceptional weekly rotation service.
