  • After the inauguration of the first school in 2024, the second one has been inaugurated today, November 5, 2025, bringing the total number of student beneficiaries in Surabaya to 800.
  • The Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia will next collaborate on the renovation of two schools in North Jakarta, scheduled to open in 2026 and welcome 800 additional students.
  • In total, 1,600 students will benefit from this partnership, improving access to education in underprivileged neighborhoods across Indonesia.
  • 3 shipping containers repurposed into libraries and 10 tonnes of plastic waste recycled into construction blocks, advancing circular economy practices.

In 2024, the CMA CGM Foundation partnered with Happy Hearts Indonesia, an organization dedicated to improving education for children in underserved areas, to renovate two schools in Surabaya. On November 6, 2025, during the inauguration of the second school, the Foundation committed to renovate two additional schools in North Jakarta, further strengthening access to education for children in Indonesia.

Renovating two additional schools in North Jakarta

Building on the Surabaya projects, the CMA CGM Foundation, in partnership with Happy Hearts Indonesia, will renovate MTS El Nur Kasysyaf, a middle school serving over 100 students, and YASPI Education Foundation, an educational complex for nearly 700 students, over the coming months. Both schools currently face challenges including deteriorating infrastructure, flooding, and overcrowding. The renovation plans include upgrading classrooms and computer labs, constructing new classrooms using recycled plastic blocks, and building libraries from shipping containers. These improvements will create safe, functional, and inspiring learning environments for nearly 800 students, while also incorporating annual CMA CGM Group staff engagement events and teacher training programs to support long-term educational development.

Success in Surabaya: SMP Bina Karya and SMP Tri Guna Bhakti

The partnership between the CMA CGM Foundation and Happy Hearts has already delivered strong results in Surabaya over the past two years.

The recently renovated SMP Bina Karya now features three upgraded classrooms, a science laboratory, a counseling room, two lavatories and two new classrooms built from recycled plastic blocks, benefiting over 200 students. Its reopening in November 2025 marks a significant milestone for the local community.

The first school, SMP Tri Guna Bhakti, was renovated and reopened in November 2024, and now accommodates more than 600 students. Renovations included seven classrooms, a teachers’ room, five lavatories, and an additional classroom constructed from recycled plastic blocks. A 40-foot shipping container was also repurposed into a library, enriching the students’ learning environment.

A Double Impact: Highlighting the social and environmental benefits of the partnership since 2024

CMA CGM Group staff members play an integral role in this collaboration by volunteering throughout the year. Their contributions range from assisting with renovation works to organizing reading sessions and sports activities for the children.

The renovation of the four schools is also expected to yield significant social and environmental benefits, including the recycling of nearly 10 tonnes of plastic into classroom blocks and a reduction of 23 tonnes of carbon emissions from construction materials.

In addition, a three-year training program for teachers and staff is being implemented alongside the renovation works in each school. The program focuses on financial and management skills to enhance teaching quality, ensure the school's sustainability, and strengthen overall administration.

Altogether, these projects are expected to positively impact more than 6,000 community members in Surabaya and Jakarta in the coming years.
