Eco-innovations : containers that are kind to the environment

CMA CGM continuously upgrades its container fleet by investing in new and reliable eco-containers. Using these containers on our largest vessels reduces fuel consumption by one or two tons per day and decreases CO2 emissions by 3.6 tons. 25% of the Group’s container fleet now have bamboo floors.

Bamboo floor

In 2005, CMA CGM was the first maritime company to conceive and invest in bamboo-floor containers. Traditionally, container floors are made of wood sourced from endangered primary forests. To protect these resources, CMA CGM uses bamboo flooring for all new container orders. Bamboo grows as quickly as grass and can be cut after 4-7 years, as opposed to 60 years for tropical wood. 25% of the Group's container fleet is now made of bamboo-floor containers.

Light steel containers

In 2008, the Group began a new era by introducing the first Light Steel containers into its fleet. These new generation containers are made from high tensile steel which saves 550 kg tare per High-Cube while retaining the structural qualities of the container. On a ship of 10,000 TEU, the use of these containers can save 1-2 tons of fuel per day and up to 3 to 6 tons of CO2 emissions.

Solvent free paint

CMA CGM was one of the first shipping companies to integrate containers using solvent free paints into its fleet because traditional paint solvents generate volatile organic compounds which have a negative carbon footprint and significant impact on air pollution.

Low consumption reefers

CMA CGM has the second largest refrigerated container fleet in the world and the vast majority of our refrigerated containers are equipped with low consumption engines, which reduce electricity and fuel consumption by over 30%. All our units are equipped with energy use management software which enables the temperature of the goods to be closely monitored and minimize wastage.

Fleet navigation & support centre : an innovative tool for maritime safety

Created in 2007 at our headquarters in Marseille, the Fleet Navigation & Support Center provides assistance and advice on all aspects of navigation. It’s role is to optimize routes, speeds and fuel consumption across the fleet while ensuring the safety of our crews and our vessels. Only two shipping companies in the world have this kind of facility, which enables us to monitor the Group’s entire fleet in real time. We can survey the weather conditions and geographical situation, and make rapid contact with the vessels if necessary.

Surveillance, control & expertize at the service of our crews

The Fleet Navigation & Support Center is particularly vigilant in areas identified at risk (from pirates, tsunamis, cyclones or typhoon etc.) and ready to suggest alternative solutions to the crew. The center compiles feedback from captains in every port to produce “Port Cards” for each member of the crew. The Fleet Navigation & Support Center is run by three highly experienced captains who constantly analyse potential incidents based on their previous experience, data-recording tools (Voyage Data Recorder) and any information related to navigation, including hazards that navigators may encounter (ECDIS). Thanks to the feedback from the crews, they are also able to improve our databases and keep all shipping information up to date. The captains at our Fleet Navigation & Support Center also participate in the training plans for CMA CGM Group seafarers.

Key features

  • The Fleet Navigation & Support Center collects and manages information to monitor all the vessels operated by the Group.
  • It tracks their position and route of all the fleet vessels.
  • It monitors areas at risk (piracy, tsunami, cyclone, typhoon, etc.) and offers alternative solutions.
  • It creates “Port Cards” for the entire fleet based on feedback from captains at each port.
