CMA CGM committed to preserving French forests

As a responsible Group that has long been committed to preserving the environment, CMA CGM has been working with the French Office National des Forêts (ONF) since 2021 to accelerate the restoration of the Massif des Maures destroyed by an exceptional fire. In 2022, the Group extended its partnership over three years and became the ONF’s first private sponsor to help preserve France’s forests.

The Group has helped restore 16 burned forests across France, supporting three types of action:

  • Public awareness of the risks of wildfires
  • Anticipating fire risks by monitoring the massifs
  • Restoration of burned forests

In 2024, 12 projects in 3 regions will be supported by the Group, such as the planting of species adapted to the new climate context in the Massif des Maures, the purchase of electric bikes for the surveillance brigades or the production of a series of video clips to raise public awareness of the risks of forest fires.

As part of its commitment to preserving France's forests, CMA CGM Group also supports the reforestation and maintenance of the 5,440-hectare Chambord forest National estate, a UNESCO World Heritage site, by preparing 27,961 young trees and planting 37,739 seedlings.

Forests are home to 70% of the world's land animal species and they are the second largest carbon sink of the planet after the oceans.

Every year, 10 million hectares of forest (around the size of Iceland) are lost as a result of deforestation, including forest fires.
